World Travel Awards nominate Algarve for ‘Leading Beach Destination’

The Algarve has once again been nominated by the prestigious World Travel Awards as a contender for the title of ‘Europe’s Leading Beach Destination’, alongside other heavyweights including Cannes (France), Corfu (Greece), the Emerald Coast (Italy), Formentera (Spain), Marbella (Spain) and Oludeniz (Turkey).

And it is not the only nomination the Algarve has received for the European round of the awards, which culminate in August with the winner’s ceremony taking place in Antalya, Turkey.

The brand new Conrad Algarve Hotel in Quinta do Lago will be thrashing it out for the title of ‘Europe’s Leading Hotel’, ‘Europe’s Leading Resort’ and ‘Europe’s Leading Golf Resort’.

The exclusive Vila Joya Hotel in Albufeira is contending in the categories of ‘Europe’s Leading Boutique Hotel’ and ‘Europe’s Leading Boutique Resort (an accolade it has held on to since 2005), while the Martinhal Beach Resort & Hotel, in Sagres, is competing for ‘Europe’s Leading Family Resort’ and ‘Europe’s Leading Villa Resort’.

Other Algarvian nominees include the Club Med da Balaia, in Albufeira (for ‘Europe’s Leading All-Inclusive Resort’), the Sheraton Pine Cliffs Resort, Albufeira, (‘Europe’s Leading Resort’), the Dona Filipa Hotel & San Lorenzo Golf Resort, Vale do Lobo (‘Europe’s Leading Golf Resort’), the Longevity Wellness Resort, Monchique (‘Leading Spa and Wellbeing Resort’) and the Quinta do Lago Hotel (‘Europe’s Leading Golf Resort’).

Desidério Silva, head of the Algarve Tourist Board, said the nominations are “proof of the quality of our region – a region of excellence.”

Chosen as ‘Europe’s Leading Golf Destination’ in last year’s 2012 World Travel Awards, this year Portugal will be looking to defend that title from stiff competition from England, France, Germany, Scotland and Spain.

The World Travel Awards distinguish the finest examples of good practice within the travel and tourism markets on a global scale. This year the event celebrates its 20th anniversary.

Feira Medieval de Silves (28 Julho - 5 Agosto)

Monumentos da cidade estão abertos durante a Feira

Quem visitar a IX Feira Medieval de Silves poderá, também, conhecer o Castelo de Silves, o Museu Municipal de Arqueologia e a Igreja da Misericórdia, já que estes espaços estarão abertos ao público no horário de funcionamento da Feira.

O Castelo de Silves, que é monumento nacional, é também o mais emblemático monumento da cidade. Esta fortificação, com cerca poligonal, é composta por uma potente muralha de taipa, revestida a arenito vermelho da região. Para além de ser um espaço defensivo, foi residência de governadores, dos seus contingentes militares e de funcionários da administração. Os vestígios de habitações palatinas que se podem observar e percorrer no seu interior são a prova física desta evidência.

Tal como noutros castelos, a presença de uma grande cisterna e silos para armazenamento de cereais é imperativa, de modo a fazer face às restrições inerentes aos períodos de cerco. Aqui, o grande aljibe muçulmano terá sido edificado em torno aos séculos XII-XIII e abasteceu de água a cidade até aos anos 90 do século XX.

O Museu Municipal de Arqueologia estará igualmente aberto aos visitantes durante todo o evento, merecendo uma visita pelo reconhecido espólio arqueológico que apresenta.

Inaugurado em 1990, este espaço foi construído em torno do admirável Poço-Cisterna Almóada dos séculos XII-XIII – descoberto após escavações arqueológicas decorridas nos anos 80 do séc. XX e hoje classificado como Monumento Nacional – que se tornou a peça central da coleção e do discurso expositivo. Cenograficamente integra, também, a muralha da cidade do mesmo período, funcionando, assim, não só como um museu onde as coleções expostas são muito significativas, mas também como uma jóia do património islâmico em Portugal.

A Igreja da Misericórdia também estará aberta ao público, podendo ser visitada, no seu interior, a exposição fotográfica de António Guerreiro, “Um Olhar Pouco Medieval”.

Almond trees in blossom - The Algarvian countryside clothed in white

Heralding the arrival of spring, almond blossoms bathe the Algarve in an unforgettable and dazzling show.

A delicate mantle of pink and white extends throughout the Barrocal lands on the orchards of inland Algarve, where many villages retain their Arabic names.

There, the special colour bestowed on the countryside by the luxuriant almond trees recalls the same flowers which, long ago, enchanted a certain Northern princess, as the Moorish Legend of the Almond Blossom tells us. 

According to this delightful story, during the time when Al Garb still belonged to the Moors, there reigned a young Caliph in Silves called Ibn-Almundim, who fell in love and marriedGilda, the daughter of a great lord from the North, who had been defeated in battle by the Moorish king. 

Their love was mutual, and the marriage was celebrated in grand style. However, the beautiful princess grew sadder day by day, with the Caliph unable to make her smile.  They consulted magicians and wise men from all over the world, but none could find a cure for her sadness…

Until one day when an old Nordic man told the king that Gilda was longing for the white snow-covered fields of her homeland.   Ibn-Almundim then ordered thousands of almond trees to be planted outside the windows of the palace, which, when they were in blossom, covered the land with white petals.  The illusion took away her longing and she became joyful once more.

And this is why, since that spring so long ago, the Algarve relives each year the magic of the almond blossom.

Paisagem algarvia vestida de branco

Prenunciando a chegada da Primavera, as amendoeiras em flor cobrem o Algarve de branco, num espectáculo deslumbrante e inesquecível.

Um manto frágil, rosado e branco que se espraia pelas terras do barrocal sobre os pomares do interior algarvio, onde muitas aldeias preservam os nomes de origem árabe.

Aí, o especial colorido conferido à paisagem pelas exuberantes amendoeiras, lembra as mesmas flores que em tempos encantaram uma certa princesa nórdica, citada na lenda mourisca das amendoeiras em flor.

Segundo esta história de encantar, no tempo em que o Al-Gharb pertencia aos árabes, reinava em Silves o jovem califa Ibn-Almundim, que se apaixonou e casou com Gilda, filha de um grande senhor dos povos do Norte, derrotado em combate pelo rei mouro.

Amor que era correspondido, pelo que o casamento foi uma grande festa, mas a bela princesa, foi a cada dia entristecendo, sem que o califa lhe arrancasse um único sorriso. Vieram magos e sábios de todo o mundo, mas ninguém conseguia encontrar cura para aquela dor.

Até que um velho nórdico disse ao rei que Gilda tinha saudades da brancura dos campos cobertos de neve, existentes no seu país. Ibn-Almundim mandou então plantar milhares de amendoeiras junto às janelas do palácio, que, quando florissem, cobririam as terras com pétalas brancas, iludindo a saudade da princesa e devolvendo-lhe a alegria.

Assim se fez e, desde essa longínqua Primavera, todos os anos o Algarve vive a magia das amendoeiras em flor.
